Basic Life Support (Adult, Paediatric and Infant)

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) ) is used to describe maintenance of airway and support of breathing and circulation in cases of cardiac arrest without the use of equipment other than a simple airway protective device.
  • The purpose of BLS is to maintain adequate ventilation and circulation until means can be obtained to reverse the underlying cause of the arrest.  Failure of the circulation for three to four minutes will lead to irreversible cerebral damage.
  • The chances of survival after cardiac arrest are increased when commencing CPR prior to the arrival of the emergency services.  Effective CPR reduces by about 50%.
